QuarkXPress and OS X Mountain Lion
QuarkXPress and OS X Mountain Lion
With the release of OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) on Jul 25, Apple introduced a new security feature called Gatekeeper, which helps you to keep your computer free of malicious software that you downlaoded. Gatekeeper allows only software from trusted sources to be installed: Apps from the Mac App Store, and apps from registered software vendors who have built their installers with a Gatekeeper signature.
Because QuarkXPress 9.3 was released before Apple introduced this new feature, Gatekeeper (at its default settings) does not allow the installer for QuarkXPress 9.3 (or earlier) to launch if you try to install from a downloaded Installer.
However, there are two ways to install QuarkXPress 9.3 (or earlier) under Mountain Lion:
- Control+click/right-click the installer icon and choose Open.
- Open System Preferences, click Security and Privacy, display the General tab, and then click Anywhere under Allow applications downloaded from.
(After installation, be sure to return this setting to its default state.)
While Quark has been testing with Mountain Lion for several months, the team is currently wrapping up testing. So in a few weeks, Quark will release a free update for QuarkXPress 9 that is compatible with Gatekeeper and has been extensively tested on the release version of Mountain Lion. That version of QuarkXPress will be the first version officially supported on Mountain Lion.
Until this upcoming version is released, Quark recommends that you use QuarkXPress 9.3 on Mac OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard, or Lion.
Update Aug 5:
Current test results and customer feedback show that for most customers QuarkXPress 9 seems to work fine under Mountain Lion with the exception of the Gatekeeper limitation.
However when using Mountain Lion with a few specific Graphics Cards, the Welcome Screen of QuarkXPress causes the application to crash. So far we know of ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5750M, ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5770 and ATI/AMD Radeon HD 6750M having this issue.
Remedy: Remove the "Welcome Sceen.xnt" from the XTensions folder.
We are working on a fix for this.
Update Aug 13:
We just released QuarkXPress 9.3.1, which is now also supported under Mountain Lion.

What are some computer skills/programs that Journalists should have?
I'm planning on dabbling in journalism, and I would like to get an internship after I graduate. I'm not very good with the computer skills that I often read are requirements for internships in general, which is discouraging. Things like Excel, for example. Anyway, I'm wondering, what sort of publishing software should I be familiar with? I don't know anything about working with layouts. Where should I start in learning about this? Are there any online resources to teach you for free or for a small fee?
Typing and pasting in HTML5 panel fields: SOLUTION
I've had some problems typing into text fields in the HTML5 palette, which has been a bit frustrating when trying to enter URLs. But I've just found the way to work that seems to completely avoid this entirely...
Simply select whatever's in there already and type something over the top or just backspace over it. This seems to make the text field get 'properly' focused, so you can then just paste or type without concern. If you need to edit something that's already in a field, select one character and type the same thing to replace it, then do your new edits.
Obviously this is something that I hope gets nailed in a bugfix round soon – new users shouldn't have to find these things out the hard way – but it's good to know there's a simple solution.

Split a Quark document into chapters or separate files
So I am struggling with the fact that even in 2013 and v 9.3 Quark can't handle large single documents with lots of photos. I have about 230 pages. Every other page contains at least 2 image files. My iMac has 16 Gb of RAM but Quark still crashes when scrolling through this document. Another reason to make the jump to ID. Quark is making it very hard for me to like them. Especially when I google the problem and realize that this is nothing new, and Quark should have fixed it a long time ago.
But for now I can't do this entire project from scratch in ID, and I can't afford to buy a plugin to convert the document on this projects budget. So what is the easiest way to split the document into book chapters? I started deleting pages and just saving the shortened document under chapter names. But I can't add them to a book for some reason. They do not contain any extra layouts.

I've got Quark Xpress 8. I'd like to know how you can create a default setting so that all text is registration black unless you instruct differently.
Problems with Blio export in QX 9.5
I must be missing something.
Quark 8.5
What's the secret to selecting ONE item in a group.
In order to make a change in a single text box/photo, I have to ungroup the whole shebang. Then re-group.
This is most annoying and I suspect there is a way, but I don't know what it is.
Just one of the many annoying things about Quark.
QuarkXpress 9 Copy and Paste with a multipage PDF Issue
When using QuarkXpress 9.5 and importing PDF's with multiple pages, I have discovered an issue that could prove costly. If I have copied the contents of an imported PDF (let's say one with 2 pages). I can Import Page 1 into a box on it's own with no issue. If I then create 3 more boxes on the same page and bring in page 2 of the PDF into one of them and then manually copy the contents (Ctrl-C) from that box into the remaining 2 empty boxes, Quark correctly displays all of the contents.
However, when you PDF the document only the boxes where you have manually imported the page you want from the PDF (Ctrl-E) are exported correctly. If you have copied and pasted the contents (Ctrl-C), Quark replaces it with the contents from Page 1...

I'm giving a public demo tomorrow, where people will be doing production themselves. This will be with QuarkXPress 9.3, so the first-generation App Studio.
