EPS Transparency issue?

Hi, I have some issues with an eps drawing... It is a line drawing generated in illustrator, one section of the drawing has a square of colour over the top of the drawing with it's transparency set to 'multiply'. When I place the drawing in the Quark (9) file, I can see that the lines on the image are breaking up (pixellating badly) over an area of about 1cm all around the square of colour. It is not just a preview issue, because when I output the file to pdf (print quality) the pixellating is still there. I'm guessing that Quark is not supporting the transparency properly. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

Issues when saving in Quark 9.5

Yet again after upgrading QuarkXPress I find I have problems with the software I wasn't previously experiencing… Whenever I hit "command S" to save the document, I now get a new "Edit Reflow Table of Contents" dialogue box appearing before it will "save". If it's a new document, the "Edit Reflow Table of Contents" dialogue box appears (which I have to either "OK' or "Cancel" to get past) before the next "Save" dialogue box appears. Is this just me that's experiencing this? How do I resolve this issue? ..... And why do we keep getting problems like this on a £900 piece of software – how properly is it tested???

Trouble adding files to a book as chapters

Hi all, first post on the forums. Hopefully i can figure this problem out. Ok so I am trying to build an index for a directory book. I'm having trouble adding a few files to a quark book. I can add some but others, no. The files appear grayed out when I look for them in the add chapters dialog box. I've already tried changing the file extensions from .qxd to .qxp and back but no luck and I know that there are no web layouts in the files, only single a single print layout. Files with issue open normally when selected through finder. They also don't show up with the quarkxpress symbol next to the file name. Just a blank pane. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and QuarkXPress 8.5. Thanks any help is greatly appreciated!! Karl

Quark errror message [-1727]

I posted the following a couple of days ago and today i got an email saying it was deleted. No one answered or offered suggestions. It would be enhance the Quark experience to get some help when someone asks for it. I still need help. I haven't been able to solve this.

 Good Afternoon:

I'm working with Quark 9.5.0, and I need to use the Box Tools > add Crop Marks Script. It was working fine a couple of weeks ago, then suddenly stopped working. It now gives me the following error messsage:  "QuarkXpress got an error:  Expected a reference [-1727]."

I've tried different types of boxes, but it doesn't matter. If anyone knows how to solve this, please help. I'm doing studio production at an ad agency that requires white space around each design and a legend at the bottom, so I need to add crop marks for everything. Doing them by hand is not fun when it used to be so easy.

 Thanks,

Kathy

Photo import size problem

Hi, could anyone shed any light on this please? I'm using QuarkXpress 7.31 to import jpegs from Photoshop CS3. Usually there's no problem -- if I have a box in my QuarkXpress layout that is 6cms wide, for example, and I'm given a 72dpi photo that is 21cms wide I usually resize the photo in Photoshop to approx 6cms using a ratio of approx 25% (as i do with all photos, so that the resolution is 300 dpi for litho printing). What has started happening recently though is that when the photo is imported into Quark, it still comes in at the original, unresized dimensions, with the percentage shown in the measurements palette bearing no resemblance to the actual one, so I now have to reduce photos down to about 10% in order to fit them into the layouts, even though I've already done this in Photoshop. What complicates things even further is that when the repro house calls up my Quark document to prepare it for printing, the pictures come in at different sizes to the size that they are on my layouts, so they have to resize them all over again. I've checked all the previews, preferences, settings etc in Quark and Photoshop and cannot seem to fix this. Any ideas? Is this a known issue using older versions of Quark with newer Mac OSs (I'm using OS 10.5.8). Will an upgrade solve this? Many thanks.

Official Statement for Windows 8 and Quark Products
(applies to QuarkXPress, QuarkXPress Server, QuarkCopyDesk and Quark Publishing Platform)

Please note that Quark Products are not yet officially certified for Windows 8. This means we do not recommend its use and cannot guarantee its compatibility. Of course we have performed basic testing on Windows 8 and don't see any major issues.

That said, and now that the final release version of Windows 8 is available, we have begun our final certification and expect that to be done for the next maintenance release of our products.

Thanks

Streaming video in InDesign?

I'd like to show a Vimeo video in a layout made in InDesign CS6. When I use the Media panel and try to add a video from the Embed code (how I do it in QuarkXPress), I'm told that "the URL must reference a file that is compliant with Flash Player." The URL is http://player.vimeo.com/video/48747211 – which DOES play using Flash in 'desktop' Safari, but of course isn't a link to an actual Flash video itself.

I know those InDesign alerts are out of App Studio's control, but how do I actually get my video working in my layout?

Hi!

I am trying to create overlays that I want to be revealed when a reader taps a button. it will reveal how-to overlays over the image on the page. This is easily one using MSO in Indesign, but how is it done in Quark using the HTML 5 palette in App Studio?

Thanks for any tips!

Nothing lines up

I've started laying out with the new HTML 5 palette and things look fine in the preview (for the most part). But on the iPad nothing lines up correctly. Headlines are way off and the layout isn't even close to WYSIWYG. I've converted heds to graphics but they're still off. Any suggestions?

Split a Quark document into chapters or separate files

So I am struggling with the fact that even in 2013 and v 9.3 Quark can't handle large single documents with lots of photos. I have about 230 pages. Every other page contains at least 2 image files. My iMac has 16 Gb of RAM but Quark still crashes when scrolling through this document. Another reason to make the jump to ID. Quark is making it very hard for me to like them. Especially when I google the problem and realize that this is nothing new, and Quark should have fixed it a long time ago.

But for now I can't do this entire project from scratch in ID, and I can't afford to buy a plugin to convert the document on this projects budget. So what is the easiest way to split the document into book chapters? I started deleting pages and just saving the shortened document under chapter names. But I can't add them to a book for some reason. They do not contain any extra layouts.

Scroll box issues HTML5 QuarkXPress

When I link a scroll box to a layout the box resizes to the width of the target layout and gives me a vertical scroll. I need my box to remain the size I created it at and provide a horizontal scroll. This works fine in AVE interactivity, where I can also choose between horizontal or vertical scrolling, but not in HTML5 interactivity. Has anyone else come across this or found a fix please?

Automatic updates in Quark 9

Why doesn't this work? I have it enabled but it didn't auto update me to 9.5 from 9.3. When I check the settings now, it tells me that my installed version is still 9.3 - it isn't, I have 9.5, and the update settings is on "manual". When I change it to automatic and apply, and then go back and check, it's back on manual.

Adding new Issues in a Newsstand App.

I was somewhat unclear about the procedure for publishing new issues. If I already have one issue out, to publish subsequent issues do I need to make an in-app purchase for the new issues, or can I just publish it under the free subscription I have for the app? I don't currently have an In-App Purchase on the individual issue now. Thank you, ~Karli~

Importing Excel graphs into Quark picture box

$

I'm on the Windows platform, and I recently upgraded to Quark 9.3 from Quark 6.52. I do a quarterly report (20 pages) that includes some graphs that I create in MS Excel. In 6.52, I used to be able to create the Excel graph, right click the graph and "copy" it, then move to Quark, select a picture box and "paste" the graph into the picture box, and a hi-res version of the graph would be placed in the picture box. The graph always printed at a very high quality on a laser printer.

I'm not able to do the same thing in Quark 9. When I try to copy the graph in Excel and paste it into an empty Quark picture box, I get a low-res image that only contains the bars of the graph - the data labels, graph title and axis titles do not appear. So then I tried creating a PDF of the graph and importing that into the picture box (I selected the graph in Excel, did File > Print and selected PDF as the printer.) I went into Quark, selected the picture box, and did File > Import and navigated to the folder containing the PDF of the graph. Quark did import the graph, but onscreen the graph is very pixellated/jaggedy edges, and when I print the page containing the graph, the data labels, axis labels, and titles (basically, all the text in the graph) is very rough looking, not sharp like they used to be when I was using Q 6.52. The graph has the same jaggedy appearance both onscreen and on paper, even when I try other PDF settings - High Quality Print, and Press Quality - in addition to Standard quality. In the PDF printer dialog box, the dpi is set to 600 for a Standard PDF and 2400 dpi for both the High Quality and Press Quality settings.

In Quark's Picture Import Help, there's a list of  file types that are supported by Quark, including EPS, PDF, TIFF, etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can import the Excel graphs and end up with a nice clean image? Maybe save it first as a different file type and import that file?

Thank you very much for addressing this question!

John

 Hello all-

Purchased Quark 9. Installed on Home workstation, and home laptop.

It now appears I would rather have a copy on my work workstation.

(Work has version 7, which of course is now useless? )

Is there any way to transfer the license from laptop to work PC?

centering a web page - in Quark - boo to 9.5

I was told by Quark that Quark 9.5 would allow me to centre a web page. Well boo. It still doesn't. I've followed the steps. Doesn't work. And there's no way on God's green Earth that I can drop in code as a fix to some CSS file. I was just hoping, as I was told, that I could say, here - centre please make this webpage centre itself. I've tried the little boxes on the left and right -- doesn't work. Boo.

Gutter between pages?

$

In Quark 8, is it possible to create a gutter between facing pages in the layout?

My printer is asking for bleeds to extend .25" beyond the trim line all around. And on facing pages, this means the bleeds overlap each other, which looks awfully funky.  Or is this standard practice?
