Quark 9.5 crashing when tryint to open 8.5 docs

 I have Quark 9.5 and it wants license numbers to open up my old 8.5 files. Why is it not recognising my upgrade paths. Anyone else having this problem.

How to Evenly Distribute items??

Hey there -- in older versions of Quark, you'd just grab a group of items, hit Command+, and then you coud distribute them horizontally or vertically. It doesn't seem to work for me in Quark 9. Am I missing something??

Lost Character Styles

Hi All, I upgraded to Quark 9.2.1 and am currently having a huge issue with it. Character styles are dropped in entire stories and within random strings of letters throughout other stories (this is a file created from several xtg's). For example, I will do the layout for an article, save, close, and when I open the file again that entire article has the character style Normal. Obviously, reapplying the character style is tedious and unhelpful because it gets rid of the overrides I actually want in there. The same thing has also been happening when I copy/paste. Copy one portion of text, and when I paste it, random sections have Normal applied to them. I tried to resave as a new file, start over from a new template in case of a corruption issue and all of these had the exact same results. A colleague of mine has also experienced this problem with Quark 9, both in OSX 10.7. Has anyone encountered or fixed this issue?

Angled grids rather than horizontal or vertical?

Hi all,

I have a brochure which contains many pic boxes which need to follow a geometric type grid rather than just horizonal or vertical. Is there a way of setting up a snappable page grid at angles rather than just horizontal and vertical lines? Can drawn lines/paths be turned to guides in the same way you can in Illustrator?

First column of text doesn't align with rest of page

Hi,

I am creating a 'Listings' page for a publication. The main body copy is 8pt on 9pt leading with inset picture boxes that will act as subheads. The picture boxes are 54pt (equivalent to six lines), have a 0pt runaround and are set on a line with 63pt leading (equalvent to seven lines) otherwise it overlaps the text that precedes it. These work fine throughout the copy. However I have to have one at the very top of the first column and no matter what I do it never aligns perfectly with the other columns.

I've had this problem before and usually resort to either justifying text, putting in returns and placing (not insetting) the picture box manually over the empty space, or placing a picture box and adding 'Space After'. However as this document is going to be edited regularly I wanted to inset all the picture box subheads and finally nail this problem.

I'm using Quark 6.5.

Modifying text input into tables

 Still brushing up on my skills, I'm doing some exercises to help me get more familiar with the program again.  (Right now, I'm trying to make a table to input my contacts from my cell phone before I install a new card into the phone).

I've never really used tables all that much, but it is rather frustrating that the program does not offer more control over how text is imputted into each cell . . . is there a way to format the entire table to input text center aligned for every cell, without having to change this in each individual cell?

I have tried clicking on the table, setting the text to input center aligned and with a 5 pt multiple insets . . . but it does not affect all the cells . . . I must, apparently, go back and manually set these adjustments to every cell.

QuarkXpress7 with Windows Vista

Hi I've seen a few posts about this but I either couldn't understand them or couldn't get them to work (i'm not that great with computers so probably my fault!) Basically, i've been given a copy of QuarkXpress7 which I'm supposed to use to put together a local paper. The trouble is my laptop has windows vista so it keeps saying that it can't install the quark disc. I read 7.3 is the first quark version that is compatible with vista, but I just wondered is there a simple way to get version 7 to work with vista ? (as i doubt they will purchase quark 7.3 especially) I've tried using the compatibility wizard, which i read might work on one forum, but it still seemed to do nothing and the disc just wouldn't load. As i say i'm not that great with technical stuff so if there is an answer I could do with an easy step by step guide to what I could do. Thanks very much for any help :-)

InDesign template

Hi all,

we have just uplaoded an InDesign CS6 template for the new App Studio, you can it here (also provides a template for CS5 and 5.5.) here:
http://docs.appstudio.net/display/AppStudio/Downloads

The difference is that CS6 added alternative layouts (similar to the project concept in QuarkXPress) and therefore needs both layouts (horizontal & vertical) with proper naming in one file. App Studio supports alternative layouts in InDesign, you just need to make sure that you use the right template.

Using Automator to automate repetitive pdf exports

Hi, Im trying to speed up my workflow... I have 10 different language versions of a catalogue (100 pages); I often need to output say 10 pages from each catalogue (the same page numbers) to a pdf for client to amend or whatever... I tried to use Automator's record function to record the procedure of exporting, giving it a title, selecting the pdf output style and then typing in of the page numbers. The automator app fails when I run it, perhaps an an applescript would be better run from within Quark, or maybe some other suggestion?

Hi everyone,

we bought, weeks ago,  3 licences of QuarkXPress 9.5 so as to upgrade the previous version we had (v8).

We tried to install on 2 workstations (Windows XP SP3). After installation, when running QuarkP Xpress on one of these workstation, we have this error message below when we tried to launch it  on the second one :

    Another user is already running this copy of quarkxpress

We uninstalled the old version (v. 8) and all components using a specific software,  we tried a clean install but whatever we do it still doesnt' work and we still have this error message.

Does anyone have an idea  ???

Scaling problem is driving me nuts! Help please.

Hi, I'm using Quark 9.5 and trying to stretch a picture to fit a box.. In the past, I was able to hold down the command key and stretch the picture any way I wanted. Now, I can't. Even holding down the command key, the photo resizes proportionally, which means I can't stretch the photo. I've tried checking different boxes from the Scale pallette with no success. Any ideas? Thanks--Steve

Linking in Quark Xpress

I would like to know if there is a way I can link one quark document within another, much like you would with images in a way. I have a catalog that I am preparing and its 900+ pages, however, some of the pages in the book are common duplicates. Is there a way I can make a "commonpage1.qxd", for example, and link that in my catalog so that if there are changes to that one page, I dont have to update it several times throughout the book, I can just update that one page "commonpage1.qxd" and it will cascade across the entire book?

Right,

I am going berserk!  I have produced my Quark document on my PC about 20 times now, each time with the same blooming problem.  Once with 1 column and again and again with more.  Each time I 'Import a picture' to Quark, it appears fine on screen in Quark.  I then go to 'File - Collect for output' which appears to work fine.  After this I go to 'File - Export - Layout as PDF' which completes however, my colour pictures in the PDF produced are missing.  I have gone to every 'Options' button however, have been unable to source any reason for this.  I have tried to print out the picture despite it not showing on the screen, and only the box with text below the picture is being printed?????

I think it must be just a tick box which has not been checked causing this, but am at my wits end and feel I am going round in circles!!

Please help.

Keyboard shortcut lost

In an earlier version of Quark I had the option of using "command button + smaller than" to make the following lines follow the margin of the first line I can't seem to find the short cut in Quark 9.5 Hope someone can help me out here. See here http://www.dmansir.dk/quark_shortcut.jpg

Link external data to an already existing table?

I already have a catalog with hundreds of tables. When we have price changes its a pain to change. Is it possible to link an external excel spreadsheet to an already existing table or do I need to create all new tables and import data. I know how to do that latter but was hoping for a short cut. Thanks! :)

QuarkXpress 9.5 error message [-1727]

 Good Afternoon:

 I'm working with Quark 9.5.0, and I need to use the Box Tools > add Crop Marks Script. It was working fine a couple of weeks ago, then suddenly stopped working. It now gives me the following error messsage:  "QuarkXpress got an error:  Expected a reference [-1727]."

 I've tried different types of boxes, but it doesn't matter. If anyone knows how to solve this, please help. I'm doing studio production at an ad agency that requires white space around each design and a legend at the bottom, so I need to add crop marks for everything. Doing them by hand is not fun when it used to be so easy.
