My work is about to lease or purchase a new color laser printer for me. I've had issues with HP in the past and my current Ricoh has had constant problems with Quark (no matter which version I've ran). Has anyone out there had good success and support from a Quark friendly office printer?

First column of text doesn't align with rest of page
Hi,
I am creating a 'Listings' page for a publication. The main body copy is 8pt on 9pt leading with inset picture boxes that will act as subheads. The picture boxes are 54pt (equivalent to six lines), have a 0pt runaround and are set on a line with 63pt leading (equalvent to seven lines) otherwise it overlaps the text that precedes it. These work fine throughout the copy. However I have to have one at the very top of the first column and no matter what I do it never aligns perfectly with the other columns.
I've had this problem before and usually resort to either justifying text, putting in returns and placing (not insetting) the picture box manually over the empty space, or placing a picture box and adding 'Space After'. However as this document is going to be edited regularly I wanted to inset all the picture box subheads and finally nail this problem.
I'm using Quark 6.5.

quark 9 crashes when exporting large pdf files.
I keep having this issue when exporting from quark 9 to pdf.
The most recent is a large file of 28 x A3 pages with graphics - so pretty big, 27mb. It saves as pdf/x-1a:2001 (90mb) but crashes when saving at low res and medium screen res! It gets to page 28, then starts finishing the pdf and crashes. I have had this before - spent ages pdf-ing each page or 5 pages at a time and no crashing. When i split the document in two it saves fine. Shouldnt be a memory issue as Im running 8gb memory and 832 gb free out of 999. Im running OSX 10.8.2 on a 27 inch imac with quark 9.3.1.1.
Quark 8 did the same to me!
if it was an image or a font it would happen however many pages I exported?
Any ideas appreciated!

Bad grid alignment when using different font sizes.
Hi folks,
Still sort of new to QXP, I recently got my bullet outlines working and save to the default job jacket. So eventually I got to the stage where I create a few header styles (character styles) for the heading/by-lines etc.
The problem I have run into occurs when the story has for example 4 different font sizes such as in the example below. When aligning the story with the baseline grid, the large heading creates open lines and bumps the text down.
I took a dive into the manual but nowhere does it discuss this scenario. I also Google'd a bit for it. It would appear as if there was a stage in QXP’s life cycle when interest in the software diminished to such an extent that its online depositories for tips and advice pales in comparison to InDesign for example. I hope the newer QXP releases kindles new interest in this really great tool.
Al I can think of is that I place the headers each in its own text box, for a short simple little outlay this might be a workaround, but I deal with long documents and there really has to be a more efficient way to deal with this outlay challenge.
Please if anyone out there can give me some advice as to how to handle stories with various font sizes such as in this example, please let me know.

Additional language dictionaries for spell checking.
Hi folks!
My latest challenge on my road to QXP domination is to establish whether there are other spelling dictionaries available for QXP – more specifically for the Afrikaans language.
If that does not exist, is it possible to manually create an auxiliary dictionary without using the regular utility in QXP – this will take years to get a complete dictionary built like that.
I have a dictionary file (in plain text) consisting of over 250,000 Afrikaans words. This .dic file I sometimes use in MS Word. I can open the .dic file in any text editor and can copy and paste etc. from and to it.
I did create a QXP auxiliary dictionary and then went and opened it in a text viewer, and found the few word I put in is there, plus a little bit of other weird chars. A further experiment also caused a message from QXP at some stage which says that the auxiliary dictionary is too large. So I am concluding there is some sort of limit to how many words this thing can take, does anyone know this limit?
So if there’s anyone out there who can shed some light onto how to create a dictionary for this language it would really be welcome. I will gladly share it with anyone who is interested.

Quark 9.5 freezing
I have a problem whereby Quark 9.5 freezes if I leave it open for more than about 30 mins without using it. I am on Mac OS 10.8.2. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Empty Spaces in words and language tags
Hello everybody,
I saw quite a few people asking, how to avoid all these <span xml:lang="de"> tags, but no answers. This is really a serious problem, at least over here. I am experiencing these tags being closed and reopened in the middle of words, resulting in emptyspaces right there, because actually, span does more than nothing, it creates whitespace. It's not that often, but often enough. Example:
dam</span><span xml:lang="de">n</span><span xml:lang="de"> whitespaces
Looks like this in the end: dam n whitespaces.
Nobody want s to read a text lik e this.
Please, please, do help. I swear, I'm desperate because of all these additonal and missing whitespaces everywhere! This is more work than a man can do and I'm afraid to break my large epub files, if I use regex search-n-replaces.

Quark won't export past page 38...
Hi, I'm fairly new to Quark. I have been working on a catalog for the last month or so and I'm to the point now where I need to export to PDF but the problem is everytime I try to export it gets to page 38 and finalizes as if that is the final page. The catalog at this point has 73 total pages including covers which I am going to have to add one more due to printer standards. Anybody have any ideas as to what could cause or could fix this issue. Thanks alot for any help.
Some background info... Not too long ago the file I was using corrupted and gave me the error "this file can not be opened by this version of Quark" or something to that nature. So luckily I had created some backups along the way and had to go back to those. Didn't realize there was an issue until I went to export.

Quark will not open
Been using QuarkXPress8 for a 3 years with no issues.......until now.
Clicked icon and as usual the rectangular box showed on the screen while the program opens and there it stayed.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled from the original disk but it is still the same.
I also clicked repair option on the CD and still no luck.
Any suggestions as all other programs are working as they should

Check Spelling is not Available
Does anyone know why the options in Check Spelling all gray out? I used this feature a few days ago with no problem. Now, when I go to Utilities> Check Spelling, all the options (Word, Story, Layout) are unavailable.
I'm using Quark 9.

QuarkXpress8 Start up Issue
Quark, when activated presents the small rectangular box as the program starts and that's it. (Egg timer spinning for all its worth)
So far I have tried the universal fix all ............. turn it off and turn it on again.
Inserting original CD and selecting repair option.......it didn't repair it.
Remove program, turn off PC turn on again and then Install as if it were a new softare package ........... still the same.
All other items on the PC are running correctly and so was Quark yesterday and saved .qxp files/projects still show as an icon, so windows still recognises the software (I assume)
Anyone got any ideas?

Page numbers in the page layout panel not displaying.
How do I get the page numbers to display in the page layout panel? It's displaying 158 pages with no info causing me to hunt a peck till I land on the correct page.

Tab breaks to second line (align to right)
Hi
I know there must be an easy way to do this but I can't figure it out. I have a directory with 100 pages of listings, the names are on the left and tabbed all the way to the right is the phone number with the .... in between the two. However, when the name is too long in the columns- the listing breaks to the second line and is aligned to the left.
what I want is the listings to look like this..

Quark 8.x and 9.x Cannot Import SWF Files into Web Page Without Crashing
I am extremely frustrated because I can create some nifty SWF animations with Quark but I cannot under any circumstance import and SWF file (Quark or Adobe) into a picture box on an HTML page made by Quark XPress v8.x or v9.x. The application always freezes and then quits. I am using Quark 8.5.1 on an 2 x 4-core mid 2010 Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8. I do not have this problem with Quark running on a G5 with OS 10.4.11. Does anyone know a workaround? Does anyone know when Quark intends to fix the problem?
I have trashed and rebuilt prefs and even reinstalled both the OS and the apps to no avail.

HELP.....I can't open a project I have been working on!
Hi,
I have been working on a project recently on Quarkxpress, however when I tried to open it this morning to continue working on it I cant open it.
Quark itself opens fine but when Itry to open the project I have been working on for the last couple of weeks it says, "This document cannot be opened by this version of QuarkXPress"
What has happened? I have not saved the file in any different format, I have been working on the project every day for the last few weeks and I have never had this problem before..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can no longer see screens lower than 40 or 50%
Something has gone wrong (Quark 8.5.1).
In order not to mis-align screens, I need to make them 70% or higher -- then after they are positioned, remember to lower them back to the percentage that I wanted.
Or -- make a PDF of the file, because the screens show up nicely in the PDF. But this causes a lot of back and forth.
Any ideas?
