I originally posted this on another thread, but after two months of no reply I'm trying again:
Hi Matthias I am also a long time user of QuarkXpress (since 1990). First off, let me say that introducing the image anchors made adjusting image size a lot faster and was a welcome feature. But it was only because it was possible to hide the picture anchors by holding down the command key, that this didn't end up being a painful update. Otherwise you would be forced to change to the object tool every time you wanted to manipulate the image box anchors. Another change but this time a pointless change in my opinion was when all the text attributes buttons were moved to the f popup menu, leaving only bold and italics. Now I see that they have been moved back in Xpress 10, so why weren't they moved back in Xpress 9 ages ago? Ok, that was it for mentioning older stuff. Now, to the new. I am too very frustrated with the modal dialogue having been moved to the measurements palette, but not because it was moved, but because Quark has changed the tab sequence between the fields that we have filled inn a million times and the number of tabs to move to each field is in our fingers. And because you have removed the apply and Ok button, you get error messages all the time when working with imported manuscripts. An example: The default indent of many word docs we get are 12,5 mm and -12,5 mm for the first line. In our text books we often use 6 mm indent and -6 for the first line. So every time I hit Shift+Command+F and start typing what I want I get the error message that the indent has to be between so and so. Before it didn't matter what the imported text indent was, because I could just fill in all the attributes I wanted and then hit Enter. Now its like Xpress hits enter every time you tab from one field to another which means that if you want a smaller indent then what is set in the text, you have to start with the first line field. If you want a bigger indent, you have to start with the left indent field. VERY FRUSTRATING. We publish books and very often there are several authors for each title and they all send us word docs with different layouts, so being able to quickly change the indents for a paragraph was very useful. Now it has become a lot slower. To finish off I just wanted to comment on your example of Apple introducing natural scrolling. They did however let you get back to traditional scrolling with just one click in the settings menu. Food for thought.
Sincerely Ole
